Bringing Science to Life: The Chief Science Officer Program at Hemlock
At Hemlock Public Schools, science isn’t just something students learn in textbooks—it’s something they experience firsthand. Thanks to the Chief Science Officer (CSO) program, students are stepping into leadership roles that make science come alive for younger learners.
Supervised by Mrs. Strachota and Mrs. Newvine, the CSO program empowers students to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education within the community. This year, Hemlock High School students Kassie Hensler and Isabelle Hutfilz, along with middle school students Emelia Yuvan and Lauren Launstein, took on the challenge of engaging younger students in hands-on scientific discovery.
One of their biggest initiatives was hosting Hemlock Elementary School students at the Lockwood STEM Center for a special Science Day. The event provided an interactive learning environment where young minds explored engineering principles, buoyancy, robotics, and even DNA construction. Through fun, hands-on activities, students not only learned key scientific concepts but also developed problem-solving skills and creativity—both essential for future success.
Creativity in science is often overlooked, yet it is the driving force behind innovation. Encouraging students to think outside the box from an early age helps them become better problem-solvers and critical thinkers. By engaging elementary students in exciting STEM activities, the CSO program fosters curiosity and a passion for learning that will carry them into the future.
Through their leadership, the CSO students are proving that science is more than just equations and experiments—it’s an exciting, ever-evolving field that shapes the world around us. Their efforts inspire younger students to embrace learning and discover the endless possibilities within STEM.
The future of science starts with young minds, and thanks to programs like CSO, Hemlock students are leading the way.

And that’s a wrap on our Spring Musical “Mary Poppins” We can thank you enough for such incredible support to sell out of all 4 performances! Thank you for the kind words and all the love and support you have given this cast! They worked so incredibly hard on this show and put in a lot of hours between practice, choreography, set painting, prop making, crew practices and so much more. The performances were Practically Perfect in Every Way
Prom tickets will be sold for Junior & Senior Prom during first lunch at the window from March 10-21. If you are not at school during first lunch tickets are $50 and can be purchased in the office.
Prom Guest Forms are printed on the light green paper and are now on the shelves outside of the office.

Student of the Week: Jack Ray Hemlock High School is proud to recognize Jack Ray as this week’s Student of the Week! Jack is an outstanding student with exceptional character, dedication, and work ethic. He not only excels in his studies at Hemlock but also demonstrates remarkable talent in his first year at the Saginaw Career Complex (SCC). Jack recently showcased his skills by winning the regional welding competition, earning him the opportunity to represent both Hemlock High School and SCC at the state competition. His hard work and natural talent in welding have set him apart as a leader among his peers, and we are excited to see what he accomplishes at the next level. Jack credits his strong work ethic to the support of his parents, who have always encouraged him to pursue his goals with determination and perseverance. He is also grateful for the teachers who have helped shape his academic journey, with his favorite teacher at Hemlock being Mr. Zolinski. Congratulations, Jack! Your dedication and achievements make Hemlock High School proud. We wish you the best of luck at the state competition!

All electronic photos must be a minimum 300-400 dpi jpg or jpeg format.
Note: ONLY those photos meeting the above guidelines will be accepted
for inclusion in the yearbook pages. Otherwise, we will use the student’s
Lifetouch photo, or the student will be listed as “not pictured”.
PLEASE! Also turn in a baby/toddler photo and additional photos of
you and your friend groups to be used during the senior video.
Email or bring to Mrs. Whitford and she will scan them.
One last thing! Seniors please send Mrs. Whitford your favorite “school
appropriate quote” to be used in the yearbook.

Scholarship Opportunities
Hemlock Community Pep Club Scholarship. It is no joke that the deadline is April 1, 2025!
The Michigan Bean Commission and Michigan Bean Festival, a non-profit organization, each year hold a scholarship contest and select two young women to represent the Michigan Dry Bean Industry. The 1st place winner receives the title of Michigan Bean Queen and a college scholarship worth $1,250. The First Runner-Up will receive a college scholarship worth $750. Deadline is July 31, 2025!

We are thrilled to announce that thanks to the Michigan School Meals Program, EVERY child at Hemlock Public School District, pre-K through 12th grade, will now be able to enjoy a delicious and nutritious breakfast and lunch for FREE!
Not only will this amazing program lighten the load on your wallet (we all know kids can eat their way through a pantry), but it'll save you precious time in the morning.
Now, here's the nitty-gritty: Although the meals are free, we do need all our parents to fill out the new free/reduced lunch application. This data is super important as it helps secure state and federal funding for this fantastic initiative.
